TopRail meeting held in person in Paris on 11 May 2022

TopRail members came to Paris on 11 May from Italy, France, Spain, UK, Japan and Switzerland to meet their TopRail colleagues in person for the first time in two years. It also provided an opportunity to welcome new representatives, including the new Engineering Manager of Venice Simplon Orient Express and colleagues online from Hungary, Portugal and Slovenia.

Railways play a vital role in keeping our cities and regions moving. They enable economic development, create employment, and connect places and people. Besides providing a safe and sustainable mode of transport, rail can tackle some of the most pressing challenges of today’s world. Too much car traffic, too many emissions, too many road fatalities: these issues can be well addressed by positioning modern railway systems at the centre of a multi-modal mobility approach.

International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) is a worldwide initiative to improve awareness for level crossing safety. Since 2009, the campaign has been spearheaded by the International Union of Railways (UIC), the worldwide railway organisation, with the support of the railway community around the world.

About 50 countries usually take part in the annual ILCAD campaign.

Each year, a partner country hosts the launch event, where we have the opportunity to share good practices and projects to improve safety and reduce the accident toll.


Shortlists announced for UIC International Sustainable Railway Awards

UIC and IRITS Events are proud to announce the shortlists for the UIC International Sustainable Railway Awards (ISRA) 2022.

ISRA recognises railway projects and initiatives driving social (‘People’), environmental (‘Planet’) and economic (‘Prosperity’) sustainability. The awards are part of UIC’s vision for the future of rail, celebrating and sharing worldwide best practice and promoting growth in the sector.

Long-distance, regional and urban passenger and freight rail operators, infrastructure owners and managers and national and local governments were among those eligible to enter work completed or implemented between 1 January 2020 and 31 October 2021 inclusive.


Mobility post-Covid: an opportunity for rail transport.(UIC)

UIC TopRail Photo Competition 2021 themed around “My Secret Rail Spots”

“Inspiring the world to enjoy sustainable tourism on rail”

As part of the European Year of Rail, UIC is organising a photo competition through its TopRail group (rail tourism) under the theme “My Secret Rail Spots”.

 

The aim of the competition is for railway employees to share their favourite spots from train journeys in order to inspire future passengers to hop on a train and take the same pictures once it becomes possible to travel again.
